wow! i remember going to grandma's many houses...all but the last one had an outhouse...i hated using it!

You could be one of my sister having that back and forth with 'mother', she could be very mean too. Eileen my oldest sister, joined the Nuns, stayed all her life out west and then came back to Montreal and died of complications with diabetes in the same city she was born in, 70 years old,

You really should write a book about those days - it would be a huge success! These vignettes of yours are perfectly drawn, and this one brought back memeories of my own! Though mine don't speak of outhouses and taking a bus out of town, they involve going down to the port, hiring on as a cabin boy or even a deckhand, and going to sea...

Sounds a bit like young Pat, if not, reminiscent of what might have been. I liked this and of course everyone smoked in those times. One was woken with the sound of Smoker's Cough.
