yes, writing for money or for yourself are different things,
if you want to make money, then you have to know your stuff, and be able to explain yourself well on paper.
if you are writing for yourself, all you need is a love of writing and the material you write about is your life. people will forgive the need for a dictionary, the grammer, and even your odd tilt on life.
i write to make sense of my thoughts and my life and if i can make someone laugh or just shake their head or perhaps not feel so all alone that is ok too.

I myself have taught, and I dislike the fact that something I say or do may leave a permanent mark on someone. Good for you to overcome the negative spirit of your teacher. Everyone has an opionion, but when we are young it is hard to determine which ones makes sense to us.

Yes very true. I had quite writing years ago when I let a teacher's opinion matter. I have been back writing now for almost 10 years. I can't imagine not writing now.
