My wife and I saw this story too, and it is indeed tragic for both of them! However, once again, people must learn the hard way . . . they're called wild animals for a reason! Leave them in their natural habitats!

I'd guess from the rule about not going in the enclosure that the animals were being kept wild deliberately, rather than making them into pets, but sadly I think that when people feel a connection with an animal it's second nature to feel it goes both ways and want to go touch the beast. It was a silly mistake with terrible consequences and I too see no reason for the lion to die, it's not like it's a risk to the public so long as they obey the rules.
