Re: I think of each of those boys as a mother's son, and thank your dad
Yes Pat I doubt if many came back., my poor old Dad was not fit enough to go. He had pneumonia 3 times and not much of a cure until a few years later until the discovery : I think they were called M+B tablets at that time. Not a good time to become ill. Happy Valentine

Re: Naut
Well Naut it used to be a terror in those long off days we were not allowed much light to show and mostly if we met oncoming traffic we pulled into the side and let them pass,
Some of the roads are still narrow, but the state of many is deplorable, no money unless the rates go up and that is not popular in this environment. Don't know what will happen when inflation creeps up.

Re:
Yes he could get away with most things Sam the past does become more bizzare as one leaves it. I remember quite a lot of your experiences, pretty hairy at times.

Very interesting to read of the memories...A lot of thoughts flow through the speaker's mind in the second poem.

That was a fine gesture! I am sure he was able to make the owner feel good about what had transpired, too! I have thought of things from the past of late myself! Nothing as cool as this but it is amazing the things that will cross one's mind from time to time! sam

Love the poem - especially the ending. Your dad did the right thing, but of course you know that.

Interesting war memories, and pleasant ones for a change, LOL. And your roads are still narrow, at least they were the last time I was over there! And what's worse, you drive on the wrong side...And I like the poem as well, with that enigmatic ending...

It was a beautiful memory CCT, Your Father with arms full of apples to boy who may never see home again...Freedom is not a free commodity and only the brave at heart can preserve it...I am so proud of all those I served with, even though their memory from time to time haunts me as I would have gladly joined them if I could...Live bravely my friend, you are a hero.

I think of each of those boys as a mother's son, and thank your dad
for tossing apples to some. As Kabu said, it was a horrible thing they faced, and I'm sure the owner could spare a handful of apples.
