I definitely am impressed by your chess abilities.  I used to win at chess over my sons when they were real little, and I have beat a couple of my grandsons when they were young, but I began bowing out when their abilities far surpassed mine.

The doing both at the same time must have taken alot of practice! Goof for him finding something he loves to do instead of sitting around, just waiting... when he lost his wife. This is a great story - waiting on more Japanese words I can use during my trip.

Nautikos

I am one of those truly impressed with your chess rating and that you played Spasky. My rating  is probably about 10 because I know how to move the pieces. LOL Wonderful series of posts and I was also impressed at the 70 year old working on that ship. I feel lucky when I can get out and walk in the driveway.

Oh yeah, about the squid drying...I have seen that many times before, so it was no eagle eye thing at all, just a welcome memory.

IIt’s an interesting experience to talk with older men that share stories. They help your understanding of history. In your case it makes you appreciate your own nautical experience better  Naut  BC-A, Bill’s R®st

It is amazing what an open minded, curious  person can learn when he is placed in new situations. You prove that a great mind is at home anywhere as long as there are new things to learn.  Your sea adventure is fascinating :-)  and I would venture to say we are all learning lots of things reading your well written stories. While reading you I am reminded of Jules Verne's "A Captain at 15".  Yes OK you are not 15 and that novel was in a whaler ship not a squid one but the enthusiasm and excitement that comes through in your narrative reminds me of that book ( mind you I read it long, long ago :-) as a kid but as you can see it made a big impression in me)  I think perhaps there is a good novel in your adventure too... just adding a little fiction here and there... perhaps a gigant squid shaking the ship  loll  ANyway,  thanks for a delightful and quite informative read  ... xoxoxo

Be it chess, shogi, or successfully doing two things at one time,

I am out of my depth. I'm beginning to find all your shipmates memorable.
