It is kind of a shame, mariss, but I just don't trust sites like Facebook and Twitter. Like my piece said, I'm constantly reading or hearing about some newsworthy person having to apologize for something they posted on line somewhere! I'm not sure which is worse . . . the fact that people's thoughts and conversations are being monitored, or that they are simply not allowed their opinions!

The witch hunt is certainly on. I just like to look at the "sayings" and pictures on Facebook. So far, many of them think like I do and it is great to read the bits of philosophy or wisdom they post. I say very little, knowing far too well what you speak of.

I for one have no use for Facebook at all, C C T. Between e-mails and phonecalls, I can keep in touch nicely with whomever I choose, and just don't feel the need to build an army of faceless friends somewhere in cyberspace ( other than the Blogit crowd, of course, which is a different arena altogether!
) And drunk driving is illegal . . . and dangerous . . . and many people still do that too! I wish they would throw the book more often at certain people . . . !

Well the book is thrown at you here if one is driving and chatting, but they still do it.
I have been defriended by three people and although I signed into facebook I have never used it at all.

Re:
And therein lies the rub, lustor! Right or wrong, people should go ahead and assume that someone else is watching or listening in. Of course, there are those among us that, for some reason, want the negative attention or scrutiny, but it's a dangerous game they're playing . . .

That's true too, lion. Remember that old saying . . . You reap what you so! Some people put themselves in these precarious situations on their own, and then complain when they get called on it! It's a strange society indeed . . .

Re: Give me liberty or give me Oppression - No!
Thanks, Katray, and I understand what you're saying. Just because a 200 year old document gives people their right to free speech shouldn't absolve them from using a little common sense as well. But at the same time, I don't think certain people should be punished or ostracized simply for giving their opinion about someone or something either. Is there a proper balance?

Yes, I've seen that too sam. In fact, I actually saw a tractor trailer run a red light while on a cell phone, and it was a minor miracle that no one was in the intersection at the time! When will people learn . . . ?

I can understand that, Naut. Not too long ago, a reporter got in trouble for stating that 80% of our prison population was black . . . even though it was a fact! Even the truth can get some people in trouble! I just don't understand it all any more . . .

We just can't take any chances anymore, Kabu, and it's really a shame! I know no one wants to intentionally hurt anyone feelings, but certain people have a way of twisting other people's words around, and the next thing you know, there's a scandal of some kind! Ridiculous!

Yeah, FSI, and such incidences are going to keep on happening while 1) people keep using these cyberspace gathering spots and 2) people don't think before they post! Stay tuned . . .

Yes, it is, adnohr! One would hope that such Orwellian practices would have worn off by now, but such is not the case! Personally, I want nothing to do with Facebook or Twitter. E-mails are sufficient for me, as is the telephone ( which may or may not be private either! ).

The thing I don't understand is why people put themselves in that kind of position, why do people add their boss to their twitter feed in the first place? Or why do celebraties have facebook accounts in their own names? It seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Still at least people can start to relearn the concept of consequence.

Give me liberty or give me Oppression - No!
I cherish our First Amendment and will not bow to fear. I know from years of researching and writing on political and associated matters that Big B is around and makes his/her presence known, sometimes when you least expect it. I feel freedom of speech carries responsibilities too. Violence inducing and threatening speech infringes on other's rights to be safe so should be guarded against. Everything else is or should be up to the individual. That said, we humans do have a knack for humiliating ourselves - because we have a need to confess our true selves? - somewhere, anywhere that we think is shielded from mass consumption?
And texting whilst driving is the second dumbest thing people do behind the wheel!
Good, thought inducing post, Jimmy!

Even worse than talking on the phone when driving (I admit I'm doing it occasionally, but it's hands-free) is texting, which is insane!
And about that free speech business - yeah, here in Canada it's not even 'enshrined', and we have some real problems with, of all people, our Human Rights Commissions! Some Muslim outfits dragged Mark Steyn through these things, which are basically Kangaroo courts, because he had presented some strictly factual material, as I do. He was eventually 'exonerated' (as if he had ever committed a crime!), but of course the expense to him and the aggravation was huge...

A great helpful post and I agree. My cell phone is always in the car just in case I need help on the road or so I can help somebody else. In Blogit I usually delete all my blogs except the first page eve.

I agree Jimmy. If you ask me, technology has replaced not only our common sense-but even worse-our manners and respect for our fellow human beings. We gossip, back stab, slander and outright abuse one another, whether it be family members or co-workers, even people who are supposed to be our best friends, without thinking about-or hereafter-taking responsibility for our thoughts, words and actions.
It's ALWAYS someone else's fault when we behave badly. Never our own.
And about being on your mobile phone while driving...I HATE THAT!
Yes, all this supposed wonderful technology has left the human race nothing short of brain dead.
In my opinion, at least.

I am amazed at the things that people say on Facebook and on the Internet in general. I remember a Baltimore Oriole, Jake Arrieta, had a public blog where he criticized some of his teammates, and it took awhile for the front office and his teammates to forgive him. He's one of many...
