You did well not to take pics inside as the Japanese are very protective of such things. I know because I took a pic in a Okinawan cemetery (lots of pagoda type toombs) and got chased back to base by a very irate lady...I had no idea that you shouldn't take photos of the toombs...They are afraid their souls will get trapped in the film you know.

So fun to read about, but no desire to do what you are doing. This gaijin wants her feet on dry, solid ground at all times. I've tried the sea thing several times and always turned green immediately.

As someone who is six foot six, I imagine that I would end up with a few bumps on my head...

I think it was a great gesture to eat as everyone else did! I think it served to show that you were committed to being part of the group! sam

Imagine it was fitted out for the shorter Japanese ouch for your
poor head.
And I am with you, no way would I eat bread and tinned soup rather than beautiful Japanese food.

Yes, well, Adnohr has Japanese in-laws and is aware of how short the people of that area tend to be. She also would have known to bring slippers.
A great story, Naut, and enjoying the pictures too. Nice that you saved the cook some hassle.

I'm enjoying this! I hope there are lots of chapters!
You bring up an interesting point, about not taking pictures inside someone's home. It's a courtesy thing. My solution is to ask cautiously, as some people as well as in some cultures, it is not polite to refuse a guest anything, regardless how you feel about it. I would not ask, May I... , for instance.
I might ask, "Do people take pictures inside here?" which is general enough to allow them to inform me what I need to know without making it personal to me as a guest.
