Note that when dogs first meets a stange dog they don't look straight into each other's eyes; they size each other up by movement, expression, tilt of the head, smell. For their humans though, yes - the expression on our faces, the relaxed or tense movements we make, our tone of voice...the doggie reads it all. If our emotion is strong, doggie will go on alert until he figures out if it's good or bad emotion. Cats do the same, The difference is that the doggie cares what you are telling them, always. Cats care if they feel like it....

I did not know that dogs are believed to be the only animal who reads our faces. Interesting.

Absolutely your doggie is a who and not a which, or even a what. And it seems that almost any dog's facial expression is a testiment to their ability to attempt to communicate with us any way they can! Sometimes I hear people say "It's a good thing my dog can't talk!" to which I usually reply "Why not? You don't think that would make for a very interesting conversation?"

I think probably wolves do not trust humans and your doggie is showing trust.
I had a collie once and I remember if I kept staring at him, he would look away and I think he looked a bit annoyed, but a loving look was different .

I used to walk a little doggie in Sydney when I was house sitting early 07
and he would insist on one street that we swap over to the other side. His family told me it was because of a big dog in one of the house yards. Poor little Harvie is a Westie and the big dog was a worry for him. Yes they are so smart....and they remember.
