Re: Wiley - didn't understand about letters that got to the men
at the ship's port of call.
Don't know if it's still true, but in those days a sailor's mail call came when his ship docked at a port of call. The guys would get letters at this port of call - and then they'd send a reply at the next. This left a big gap between questions and answers. It's possible since the Saratoga was an aircraft carrier they had mail call on a regular schedule except when they were in battle.

Wagga where my son still lives has an army boot camp. i used to have a
coffee shop and those kids were finally let off camp after six weeks. Any that wandered into my shop got treated by Mama Kabu....they were so young and homesick and shocked from their treatment.

Loved your enlistment part of he story, right on, same in Canada without having to be naked in a gymnasium. Only sentence I didn't understand in this superb story is; "Family letters got to the men get at the ship’s port of call."Great writing luv

It is fun to read your story and compare it to all of the things Son told me about his Navy days. His boot camp training was in Orlando, FL but his best friend Craig trained in Bremerton.

Well not quite so bad but we had to do most of this as conscripts Pat. I did send seven and sixpence home from thirty shillings, felt pretty sick for a month and we all felt very
resentful.
