Really, Kabu? That must funny, in and of itself! I always wondered what they sound like when they satirize us?

and yes, I worked with many Chinese Nurses aides with me and have Chinese friends, and if you make fun of the way they sound talking their language, they roll on the floor laughing with you.

Re:

An interesting theory, Against, but I wouldn't be quite sure what their motivation might be. Remember, this was a Chinese news agency reporting on the North Korean leader, and both governments are Communist! Perhaps the Chinses news media knew it was a spoof, and wanted to get a little "dig" on the young leader! Hey, almost the entire rest of the world seems to enjoy goofing on our presidents . . . !

Re: JimmyA

I never thought of that, Wiley! Perhaps you're right, and that's why The Onion decided to choose him! At this point, they might even be considering him as their new mascot! Hey, stranger things have happened . . . !

Re:

Well, Annicita, I honestly didn't think there would be too many women out there who might actually exclaim "Oh, yes! That Kim is soooo hot!" Maybe to some of the North Korean women . . .

I would like to think that the language barrier may be a factor in the Chinese media misconstruing the rhetoric by Opinion, but perhaps it is a matter of the Chinese government taking a piece, even if it is satire in context, and running with it to pull it over on its readership.

Re:

I wouldn't doubt that, C C T. I guess it's really a matter of comparison. What's sexy to some is roll-over-and-go-to-sleep ugly to others!

Re:

Maybe, FSI. Especially if they can actually believe a news story like that! I'll wager that, if Kim Jung-Un himself saw that, he wouldn't believe it either!

Re: Deceivers are themselves easily deceived?..or something like that..:)

Glad you enjoyed it, Katray. But even in an area under extreme media control, someone should recognize the difference between serious news and satire! Or is that only is this country?

Re:

You may not have to be, luster! One person's Carrot Top is another person's Clark Gable . . . or something like that!

Re:

It may have, adnohr, if he believed it himself! Yeah, you would think that someone on the Chinese news staff would have figured out that The Onion was being satirical! Hey, let's keep it our little joke!

Re:

I remember that, Utah. Wasn't it the U.S.S. Puablo ( not sure of the spelling )? They told their captives it was the Hawaiian good luck sign . . . and paid for it with a few beatings when their captives discovered otherwise. See? Certain types of humor are not universal!

Re:

Good question, TAPS. What is attractive to one culture could very easily be repulsive to another! Where does Kim Jung-Un fall, I wonder?

Re:

Six months, Justi? Is that all? Never mind the news service itself. I can only wonder how many of the Chinese people who read that actually believed that! And since when is blubber sexy?

Re: No....and his smile?????? I must have missed that moment.

I believe, Kabu, that the Chinese are raised in a very serious environment, all through their lives. I'm sure they have their own sense of humor, but obviously this type of satire is completely lost on them! Too bad! Most satire is extremely funny!

Re: Jimmy

I guess, Naut, that's what makes the world go 'round. Certain types of humor are universal, I suppose, while other types are only meant for a "select" few. Some people loved Monty Python, but others hated them ( English humor ). Some people loved Saturday Night Live, but didn't care for Second City TV ( Canadian ). Me, I can find humor almost anywhere! It's either funny to me, or it's not!

As far as Communist controlled media is concerned and perhaps media everywhere... I did get a chuckle from this; thanks for passing it on.

Oh my! So none of the staff on that paper are educated in foreign cultures and attitudes? I expect it made Kim's day!

That's a hoot. I remember when North Korea took one of our ships, crew and all for being a spy ship. When the photographed the crew to show the world how happy they were with their captures the crew all flipped the bird, telling their captures it was a friendly sign back home.

Do the Chinese have the same understanding of "sexiest" as the Americans?  Cultures are so different.

I doub't they are so gullible. Sexy that hunk of blubber! No body could believe that as a true statement. It just needed another six months of safety.

No....and his smile?????? I must have missed that moment.

Asian folk often have a different take on humour to some of us and in my experience working with and knowing many Chinese, even have a cousin by marriage,Western Satire can be quite foreign to their way of thinking.

Jimmy

LOL! But it doesn't surprise me: it's my experience with Chinese that unless they're born and raised here, they don't 'get' our satire, irony and subtle humour...Of course, we don't get theirs either...
