LoL, the desert provides many a curious challenge for city slickers.
I know, my brother has lived out on the desert for several decades now. Whenever I sunbathe on the front steps, his dogs take up positons to my fore and aft, like submarine missiles waiting for anything "out there" to move.

I am glad to read that the dog is doing fine...Fortunately where I live we have nothing to worry about with wildlife coming to the trash.
