There could be other factors, C C T, that were simply missing from the original story that may never surface. It was difficult for me to imagine someone being so blatantly cold to a so-called friend as well. I just cannot see any logical reason though to refuse such a simple request, especially in that manner. I'm glad most people aren't like that. As for those trees, yes, believe it or not, they are all cut up ( what a chore! ). Now it's just a matter of when the township will come and haul it all away!

That's how it appeared, Katray. I'm grateful that not everyone over here had that same attitude. Like I wrote, there were many stories of generosity and people helping people. Hopefully, incidences like these were few and far between!

Thanks, Ramfamily. I'm not sure though if such behavior is restricted to the East Coast states. I think I can imagine such a situation taking place almost anywhere. Our rep is bad enough. I'd hate to think that we're now going to be labelled the "I've got mine, but screw you!" state. A sad tale, and state of affairs, indeed!

Also something to ponder, Straight. I believe those types of people are usually called "fair weather friends." They are there for the good times, but when the going gets rough, they're nowhere to be found! Hard to imagine sometimes . . .

She probably already did, mariss. Unfortunately it is also probably true that there are many people out there that, for one reason or another, just can't be bothered with someone who has children that are considered special needs. It's a shame, but they're out there!

You may be right about that as well, adnohr. It's always tough to come to any rational conclusions with tales such as these when you get it third person. Who knows what really happened?

Sounds a bit too horrible in the circumstances Jimmy, I can't believe any one would sink so low. I can only imagine that the bad neighbour had OCD and was terrified of contamination. She might have even thought she could not take the drug because she was afraid her fridge might conk out. Take a hike seems out of character in the circumstances. If it was true it is extremely sad.Cut those trees up yet?

Seems to be the way it goes in most east coast states (in my experience). Sad tale my friend. Hope everything is going well.

I completely believe it. Some of the snobs of this world would not look across the street and certainly not cross it for a special needs type person. They might get rid of a friend who reminded them they had a special needs kid. These are the sorts my poem was referring to and such, but worse incidents. The lady should find other friends.

Some people did, luster, but many, many people were forced to depend on the kindness of strangers, who actually came through for them. However, this was apparently no stranger, which makes it even more disturbing!

That seems to be the general consensus, TAPS. Something must have happened between these two women prior to the power outages that spilled over and lead up to this incident. Unfortunately we'll probably never know what that may have been . . .

Re: Jimmy
You could be right, Naut. There may be huge pieces of the story missing that might actually justify the reaction by the second woman. But it's hard for me to imagine what they might be. Of course that's if, like you said, the story is entirely true in the first place, although I wouldn't understand either why someone might make up such a tale. Regardless, if it is completely true, then that first woman was just stabbed in the back by a so-called friend, for reasons we may never learn of!

Mine too, Annicita, if we had lived closer. Unless that first woman did something so unbelievably terrible to the second woman prior to the power outages to cause her to cut her off so blatantly, I saw absolutely no reason to refuse such a simple request. It is sad . . .

It would appear that way, Kabu. I suppose she could be one of those kinds of people that feels, with all of her money and possessions, she doesn't have to associate with and be kind to the "hoi polloi" if she doesn't have to. But to do such an about-face on their friendship, especially with a special needs child caught in the middle, just made very little sense to me!

Actually, FSI, it wasn't my wife and me. This was a tale told to me by a third party, and it was he and his wife that offered their fridge space. But if that had been one of our neighbors with such a simple request, there's no doubt that my wife and I would have obliged. We'd have absolutely no reason not to.

Re:
It didn't to me either, adnohr. Perhaps you and Ciel are correct in assuming that something else did happen between these two women previously that caused such a rift. Regardless, it wasn't as if the first woman wanted to borrow some sugar, or asked to use one of their outlets to run her hair dryer, or something trivial like that. No matter what may have transpired between them, to deny such a request seemed completely insensitive to me. If there's a beef, punish the woman, not her child!

Re: Hard to comprehend how such a request could be refused.
I know, Ciel, that there's usually two sides to every story. Perhaps something did happen between these women prior to the storm and the power outages that we may never learn. But it's hard for me to fathom that it could have been so detrimental as to cause the one woman to refuse such a simple ( and potentially life-saving ) request from the other, just as it's difficult for me to fathom the second woman being so cold-hearted. Something must have happened!

That story sounds almost unbelievable, and I mean that literally. I may be wrong, of course, but I suspect that it got worse in the telling than it really was, and that there are aspects to it that somehow explain it...
