There are many programs in place to help a myriad of people with special needs, and of course, at the same time, there are many out there poised to take advantage of ( and thus abuse ) some of these programs. It's hard to know sometimes where the need may actually arise from. I enjoy spending time with my cats, but I don't necssarily look at it as a "need." As long as these dogs are well-trained and work well with their owners, I really don't mind one way or the other.

Ciel I have not as yet seen a service dog but there is an old lady near here who always takes her dog in a pram. She was banned from a supermarket for hygienic purposes although she still takes him hidden beneath a blanket. It is a rather ironic because sometimes there are several large blind dog owner with massive dogs and no one questions them. I can tell you though one someone thinks of that idea of a service dog over here, they will soon appear everywhere, like the disabled badges on car windows.

Re: Annicita,

this would definitely be a concern with untrained dogs, who really are pets and not true service dogs. I am wondering how easy it is, or not, to get one's dog certified or reistered or qualified as a service dog.

Kabu, she and I chatted through the flight

and she had some definite health concerns that made the service dog totally legit.

Ciel

As someone who likes to have his dog around a lot, even though he is more of a dog to be serviced than a service dog, I don't have much concern over anyone abusing that designation. I think people my do it because they feel we're generally too restrictive about dogs.

For example in Holland, Belgium and Germany dogs are allowed in restaurants, as long as thyey're on a leash and well-behaved. I don't recall the situation in France and Britain, but it may be the same.

Of course, I'm one of those people who are not too concerned about speeding or over-parking either. Of course, I do draw the line at drinking anything but coffee, tea, pop or water when driving, and at texting and applying make-up, LOL...
