Re: I'm very worried about those in SI and the Rockaways who are still without

Yes, dsm tchr, there were a lot of people who actually suffered worse fates than us. There were many who were told/ordered to evacuate certain areas, but for one reason or another refused to do so. And unfortunately, many paid for that decision with their lives. Hopefully, in this aftermath, people will have learned a valuable lesson in "safety first," and can appreciate the value of human life. Material items can be replaced . . . people cannot!

I'm very worried about those in SI and the Rockaways who are still without

power in the  cold weather.  Many should have been evacuated to a warmer climate, especially the elders, infirm and children.

Re:

Thank you, Against. Yes, that's partly true. Certain things we take for granted we don't fully understand . . . until we lose them! However, both my wife and I had grown up in environments where we really couldn't take anything for granted. We just learned to either compensate, or do without! We are not extravagant people by any means! But we didn't think that heat and electricty were too much to ask for, and now we have them back! Joy! Bliss! If we could survive this, I think we could survive almost anything! The best part was, we had each other to lean on. I'm not sure if we could have made it individually on our own. Having that mutual support probably made all the difference!

Welcome back, Jimmy!  It is good to hear you rode out the storm and are now on the rebound, counting the blessings that before you had taken for granted.

Re:

Thanks so much, Utah. Self-preservation is a very strong emotion, and with the help of a cool head and a little common sense, yes, we humans can overcome many obstacles. However, it still isn't something I would like to have to deal with on a regular basis! Now let's back into the swing of things . . .

Re:

Well, luster, I've always been able to deal with the cold in general, but it was difficult for my wife. Yes, a few extra layers of clothes and a thick comforter did do the trick! Glad to be back to normal!

Re: JimmyA

Thanks, Wiley. I guess "survival" is the most basic of instincts, and it helps tremendously to have a wonderful wife and partner with you when you go through something like this. But look who I'm telling . . .

Re:

Thank you, Justi. And you won't get any argument from me concerning my marriage, and the wonderful partnership I have with my wife. I'm not sure if either of us would have been able to deal with this particular situation had we each been on our own. In unity there is strength, and our marriage is exceptionally strong!

Re: Re: Re: I guess the fact that we sat up until the wee hours watching your election

Well, Kabu, we did get hit with a fairly major winter storm last night . . . and survived that too! It was cold, it was windy, and I woke up this morning to a winter wonderland that would have made Santa jealous! But we got through that as well! The Hulk has nothing on us!

Re:

Thanks so much, Annicita. Yes, when we walk into a room and throw on a lightswitch, we never take the time to realize what a marvel that actually is. My wife and I were never ones to take anything for granted, and this was no exception. You do what you have to in order to survive. And that's just what we did!

A few years back at Christmas time with 28 inches of snow, we went 5 days without power. We have a wood burning stove and many of the neighbors came here to cook morning coffee and dinner, warm their fingers. It is amazing how much we humans have come to rely on our modern way of life and yet we find we can survive most anything when it is put upon us. I am so thankful that things are looking up for you and your wife. I will keep you and all your neighbors in my prayers until life is again the way it was.

I just cant imagine what that was like, I know we all have fits if the electricty goes out for more than an hour.  I guess you must of had layers of clothes and blankets on

I want you to know you have been prayed for and we will continue to pray for those there. It is a wonderful marriage that becomes a bonding team in dire circumstances; you are a great couple. May God bless you in all your ways.

Re:

Thanks, mariss. Yes, we're hoping that this storm is as gentle as any storm can be. However, as I write this, I'm looking out the window and watching seemingly tons of snow fall! What timing! We're back up and running, but many others are not yet. This will place a terrible hamper on the restorations of other areas! It seems as though Mother Nature is really angry with us right now! Perhaps this is Her way of doing away with that stupid "Jersey Shore" program once and for all!

Re: I guess the fact that we sat up until the wee hours watching your election

Thank you so much, Kabu. Yes, niether one of us had ever been forced to endure anything of that nature before, so the fact that we came through it as well as we did speaks volumes not only of our "intestinal fortitude," but of the solid rock that is our marriage. They say "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger." If that's actually true, then from now on my wife and I will be referring to ourselves as Mr. & Mrs. Hulk!

Re: Huzzah!

Yeah, Ciel, I think I may have heard about that too. Hmmm . . . those people had plenty of power and heat, so forgive me if I don't get too involved in this particular topic . . . yet! Stay tuned . . .

Re:

Thank you too, FSI. What an amazing feeling. It was beginning to feel as though we would never have power again. I know that's unrealistic, and we would have had it restored eventually, but we were very nearly at our wits end. The lack of lights was one thing, but the lack of heat was far worse to deal with. Just in the nick of time . . . !

Re:

Thanks, adnohr. Although I feel bad for what you had to endure, it's at least nice to know that others out there can relate to what we had just endured. My wife and I slept so good last night!

Re:

I hope not, TAPS! The things we take for granted sometimes. The joy my wife felt when the lights came on, and the look on her face when she opened the refridgerator, and the light came on in there, as well as feeling the cold, was almost indescribable. Talk about roughing it!

Re: Jimmy

Thank you, Amanda. We're gettin' there! Like I wrote, we're still "picking up the pieces" in some respects, but at least with our power restored the return to normal will go a little swifter. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers.

results is pretty minor compared to POWER!!! LOl....Congratulations dear friend to you and to your lovely wife. I am fed up after a few hours if the power goes out and start to beg Wiley to fix it....so I really admire your fortitude and ability to not just survive but to cope really well in what has been a horrid situation. I am so relieved and am sending a prayer of thanks that as the temperatures drop you are safe.

Oh man - do I know how you felt when the power came back on! I lived through the Quebec Ice storm, and had no power (and no water system nor heat) for 22 days. The when the workers showed to hook me back up, my dog at the time, my old Ben, barked at them to chase them away. I don't think that dog was ever scolded so loudly, LOLOL!When it all came back on, it was a great night!!! Happy that things are getting back to normal for you!!
