To begin with, during the preschool years a child's play is his work. That is how he learns. As children progress through the years it must be a slow change-over combo from play to work. The two go hand in hand throughout life. Some never outgrow play at all.

My favorite memories of school are the sing-alongs first thing...
We learned songs like "Waltzing Matilda" and others. Teachers read to us even up in 2nd and 3rd grade, fifteen minutes or so - many of us checked out the books and read them for ourselves because we couldn't wait for what happened next. It spurred a love of learning.

Have you read or experienced any thing of Montessori schools? They seem to take the principal to its extreme and it appears to work for them
