Re:
All true, C C T. As I wrote, no food product should be wasted, in any shape or form, but throwing away a meat product is far worse, simply because it was a living creature at one time! And yes, I've heard and read about the dwindling of the fish population due to overfishing and pollution. One day, a steak in a restaurant is going to cost $100, and a small fish filet will be $70! I think fruits and vegetables will always be a smarter, and healthier, way to go! Thanks for the input!

Well Jimmy I can see a time when animals will not be available as food. Meat will be too expensive and the fish stocks look dodgy. I am reminded of the old farmer who loved his pigs and though he ate them he was grateful for the honour it provided him. Meat really should be treated with reverence as it was a living creature and hopefully did not suffer through its short life. I usually have Quorn products, or free range chicken if not too expensive. Of course some folk have no choice and buy as cheaply as possible, but even bread should not be wasted, birds eat it in moderation.

Re: Excellent piece, Jimmy! I don't eat nearly as much meat as I once did
Thanks, Katray, and an excellent response too. Like I wrote, I too like having a steak or some chicken or whatever every once in a while, but those incidences are so few and far between that it's become easier to keep my weight down, and my health up! I know several people who believe that every meal must have some meat component attached to it, and they are all extremely overweight and probably very unhealthy. I also know a few who go to McDonalds or Burger King for lunch almost every, single day. I don't bother preaching to these people anymore ( they're all adults ) but I always say the same thing: "You're gonna pay for it later!" Thanks for the feedback.

Very little nowadays..For a host of reasons; number one being that I finally understood animals are life too. Actually plants, trees, etc. are also but they have a perennial ability that us mammals and other species lack. I do get cravings for meat and indulge every great once in awhile. It is healthier for the body and budget and humane too!

I'm glad I'm not alone, FSI. That's why I wrote, throwing away some vegetables or waffles or ice cream is one thing . . . but when it was a living creature that gave its life, the "sin" of throwing away food seems to be magnified, at least to me!

Re:
Well, Utah, believe it or not, placing beets on the "endangered species list" would not affect me in the slightest! Since I've been married, my wife has gotten me to eat broccoli, asparagus, squash, spinach, cauliflower, and a host of other vegies that, years ago, I wouldn't touch starving on a desert island! However, there are still two vegetables that no matter what, I simply cannot stomach . . . beets and lima beans! There's just something about their respective tastes that actually make me gag!

Re:
Thanks Sam. Again, my adversity wasn't toward the consumption of the animals themselves, regardless if they were farmed or free-range. My point was against the throwing away and wasting of the animal product in the first place. I'm sure that, when your family's budget was very tight ( like many of us now ) none of those meat products were wasted in any way! I don't care what people eat . . . just eat it, and don't arbitrarily throw it away!

Re:
Don't worry, Annicita. I've read and seen my share of stories and images that would "scare anyone straight" about not eating meat anymore. As I wrote, my consumption for any meat has dropped dramatically since I've been married, as my intake of various fruits and vegetables has increased, and I'm much healthier for it! By the way, couldn't that book have been called Skinny Gal or Skinny Lady or Skinny Woman instead? Or was it called Skinny Bitch because all of the overweight girls just become jealous and resentful?

That may be true, Kabu. I think I read something along those lines recently here in the US as well. Regardless of anyone's priorities, wasting anything, especially food, should really be occupying people's mind a lot more!

Re: JimmyA
I hope so, Wiley. Maybe, just maybe, someone might read my post and think twice before filling up their freezer with food stuffs that may only get thrown away some time down the road because they forgot about it. In this day and age, I just can't see anyone willing to waste food and money like that!

Re: Jimmy, your point is well taken
Thank you too, Straight. I was hoping that I wouldn't come off as being too "preachy." I just find it difficult sometimes to accept some people's cavalier approach to wasting food. I assumed that this would be a topic that anyone and everyone could relate to.

Re: I agree.
Thanks, Ciel. I wasn't sure if I was going to get much opposition on this topic! I can't see anyone having no qualms about arbitrarily throwing food items away!

Re:
That's all well and good too, adnohr, and I'm no fan of hunting either. But as I wrote, no food items should be thrown away, especially if it's from an animal. I have no problems with left-overs, and many a good stew or soup can be made from something "laying around" in the fridge! Keep stretching those food dollars, people! It's easier than we think!

Re: Jimmy
That's fine, Naut. I guess I too can consider myself a "semi-vegetarian." But that probably just means less red meat and more fruits and vegetables. It's got to be healthier. Like I wrote, it doesn't matter what you eat for the most part - it's the waste and throwing away of food, any food, that really should be the issue. And I can only hope, from what I've read recently, that Canada does not throw away as much food as we do here in the USA. We could feed at least a half a dozen third world countries with what we trash over here! It's a shame, and very few people seem to care!

What you write makes a lot of sense to me. I think about the same sort of thing when I see someone throwing away a meat product.

All food comes from living creatures. Although you don't need to kill the apple tree for the apple...But the beet is doomed.

I was raised on wild game so I have a different take on all of this! They aren't poor animals for me because it kept my family alive when the money was tight or even non existent! But, you are right, food should not be wasted, not even for a commercial for me! sam

Oh boy - I very rarely can throw any food away...everything is used up and stretched out, or ends up in the soup pot, what with the cost of the stuff today!! My son is a hunter; deer, moose, cariboo, and plenty of fish makes up a good part of our diet. Although I'm not a fan of hunting, at least the animal is free range and has a decent kind of life in the meantime. Only free range chickens end up in my freezer too.

Interesting thoughts! I have absolutely no data on it, but I strongly suspect the waste of food in both your country and here in Canada is humongous! And about the vegetarian thing: I too am a kind of 'semi- vegetarian', if there's such a thing. I do not like chicken - do you know how they are kept? But I do have the odd beef and pork, and then there's fish, and lobster, and since it's Friday, I'm gonna go and get myself some oysters...
