Yeah, those numbers look wonderful, but we must remember . . . back then, most people were only making about $60 a week! To them, those gas prices were high! It's all a matter of comparison.

That was my year--the year I graduated from high school, started dating in earnest, got my first real, full-time job and started making enough money to buy things I had always wanted, like fancy clothes and spike heels, and fancy bags, and lots of makeup. That year, and the remaining '50s was a great time for me. And the music--I loved it.
