I was going to say a sun dial but Kabu picked my second guess but what about a water diviner's stick I bet they were used in Africa before the Chinese had evolved.

that I did not know. I know that quite often the peeling is as good for you and rich in vitamins etc, but did not know about the negative calorie thing

Now I am thinking the Chinese for they had many great inventions
long before Europe etc...like China so I am going to say the Chinese several thousand years ago and I was going to say sundial but no.......a rain gauge!!
