Sometimes it's difficult, but I think that everyone needs to thicken their skin a bit. Like you, I usually try to avoid such discussions, because there is never, ever going to be a time in which everyone agrees with everyone else, and there's almost always going to be a few dissenters. That's why they're called opinions. But don't be disheartened. If you have something to say on a particular topic, go ahead and say it, and then let the chips fall where they may! If you choose to avoid it altogether, that's alright too. It's your own peace-of-mind that's most important!

The poor are not the only ones who will always be with us.

My solution to the commenter who posts something I find offensive or too ridiculous to take seriously, is simply not to engage.  Like you , I welcome intelligent and respectful discourse.  There's just no point to the vitriolic sniping, the competition of so-clever comebacks...  And some folks are just spoilin' for a fight!

What TAPS wrote makes a lot of sense to me.

Don't worry Ray, I know you mean well, you just cannot please everyone. Some may misconstrue what you say, not even bothering to fathom your true feelings. Perhaps even hoping for a  burst of anger and really it is not worth your effort to appease or react to such suggestions. Not good for your well being Ray.On your side

It will always be thus.  As long as humans have minds, and emotions, and opinions.
One just has to decide how much they wish to participate in the fray.
