Shyness . . . missed opportunities . . . confusion . . . mindful of your surroundings . . . these all come to mind with such a tale. And I think it's safe to say that many of us have been in the exact same position, albeit in different settings. I guess "two ships that pass in the night" is better than "two ships that crash in the night!"
