Re:

surely the guys born in the fifties and sixties are in charge of things now - but if you look at the root of the difference between the guys born in the 20's and those guys who came of age in the 60's the advent of mass communication or media coupled with the pop culture that came with it was the difference.  And here you have to look at an increaingly politically aware youth - which has to be good, and the frivolity of pop culture which threw up the 60's protest movement.  I agree they were floored but they were aware of more than previous generations in terms of raw facts, and aware of their own power.  What hampered their reasoning was idealism - they looked at the surface of political issues - they were idealists, and any idealist is floored because ideals are unrealistic.  Just like the fall of the iron curtain and now the arab spring, the sixties in america were a bursting out of freedom.  Your country is very beautiful Jim - but it is still reeling from the experience of that bursting out of freedom.

You might be unnecessarily driving yourself crazy, dude! I agree that there seems to have been a steady decline in our morals and intellectual pursuits over the past couple of hundred ( thousand? ) years or so. But trying to make any sense of it is like trying your best to walk on water. It's just not gonna happen! To me, the greatest generation will always be those who fought in and lived through WW II, and the worst generation was made of up of those who came of age in the '60's ( at least here in the states ). While they were running around with flowers and beads in their hair protesting things they didn't fully understand, they were paying very little attention to the possible solutions to those problems. Now those people are in charge of everything, and everything is a mess! See if anyone can explain that!

I'm old enough to be your grandma and I'm still trying to figure out what to make of it all.....especially the political scene in the USA.
