I wasn't expecting that
You have a true gift for imagery. I love the way you put the reader in the scene with your descriptive words. I have two boys and imagined them in your scene, lol. Your poem was like reading a day with them on one our walks on the trails in our area. :-) Good times. They're older now and those days are over, so thank you for the nostaligic moment. I look forward to reading more of your work.

Re: Oh! I have only encountered one snake and it was enough, lol!
Thank you, Kat. I tried to make it as surprising as the experience was.

Re: sam
I've found the same thing - they can be stubborn. I wrote a poem about how a blacksnake refused to even budge, and even shook his tail like a rattler to scare me away. I've since read that lots of non-poisonous snakes do that.

Re: Snakes would rather slither out of the way than find thensleves in
It was a total shock - for both of us, I'm sure. I'm reminded of Emily Dickinson's poem, "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass" that ends so vividly, saying she
"... never met this fellow,
attended or alone,
without a tighter breathing,
and zero at the bone."
Now THAT says it all.

I can relate totally~ My daughter was mowing the lawn this evening and one stopped her in her tracks because he would not slither away! I eve tossed a couple of stones his way to get him to move but he was a stubborn one! Thankfully she got the lawn mowed! sam

Re: wellingtons
My legs are particularly attractive, CC, but thank God the snakes don't think so.

Re:stepping on one
I've actually done that, but luckily I picked a nice one- he wriggled out and fled before I put my weight down. Memorable!

Re: 2902
Ace, I've been lucky - only a blacksnake, but he made me jump. I wasn't looking for him at all. As for the other kinds, I often wonder just how close they've been.

Liked this one! It's better than stepping on it, to say the least.

Well if this is a story that happened to you, I sure hope you are OKAY! Get you a good walking staff. Be careful and safe! Ace.

Damn! And I was hoping to have rid myself of the phobia - a huge shudder at the end of this poem.
