Re:

There ya go, nomad. I too have trouble remembering people's names from time to time, although I never forget a face! Not sure if playing Scrabble or Jeopardy would help with that particular problem, but it couldn't hurt! Like I wrote, any exercise for the mind is better than nothing at all! Thanks for weighing in!

Enjoyed reading about exercising the brain...so important!  I am someone who occasionally forgets the names of people, need to do something about it soon...like playing scrabble and jeaopardy perhaps...

Re:

Thanks, mariss. Yeah, I do consider myself lucky with the makeup and closeness of my family. And now, the next time my mom visits, I have a substantial reason to challenge her to another game of Scrabble . . . revenge! ( just teasin' ). Like I always tell people, exercising your body is all well and good . . . but exercising your brain is just as important, if not more important!

Your family sounds so wonderful.  A visit to envy!! And good news for you and her after the Scrabble game.  Keeping the brain active is the right idea.

Re:

Yeah, adnohr, they can fool ya sometimes! Some people take their own educations for granted, while others assume that the older people get, the more they lose not only their ability to learn new things, but they tend to lose what knowledge they already posess. Neither is necessarily true. Keep crunching those numbers! Your brain ( and perhaps your toes ) will benefit in the long run!

Re: Jimmy

I hope so, Naut. I've seen the terrible effects dementia and Alzheimer's can have on certain people, and I'd hate to see my mom go through that. But after the way she handled herself during those Scrabble games . . . !

Re:

No, it's not, TAPS. Like I wrote, we just have to be a little patient with people my mom's age, which I am. And we all need to be diligent with the exercises for our own minds! I know I will!

I agree - I don't play games either, but because I am still working in numbers, etc., it keeps my brain on its toes...well - you know what I mean. I know my mom would play cribbage and all types of card games, and her memory was sharp. Sometimes too sharp!

Jimmy

Of course you're absolutely correct! And good for your Mom - if she keeps it up, she won't have to worry about the big A...

It's a proven fact that a person your mom's age can learn anything you can learn, it just takes 10% longer.  If it take you an hour to learn something new, your mom will probably learn it in an hour and six minutes.  That's not so bad.

Re: JimmyA

Thank you, sir. Believe it or not, I still have a fully-functioning SuperNintendo system that I play from time to time, and am hooked on Tetris II! Lotsa fun, and, like you said, a great brain manipulater! Keep clearing those mines, my friend!

JimmyA

Good for your mum beating y'all at scrabble. I love that game as well but haven't played it in quite a few years. Kabu isn't competitive at all and doesn't like games. I'm the video game freak with my Playstation 2 still, and I love Minesweeper all the time but my brother Joe hates the game. I told him, the object is to manipulate your brain, get mad even, but those things make old age worthwhile still for me. Good post my friend.

Re: Sounds as though your Sister is babying and protective too much of Moth

Yes we are, Kabu. And, yeah, my sister can be a little overprotective of mom at times, but I'd rather she have too much concern for mom's well-being than very little or none at all ( unfortunately, like in the families of some people I know )! I still say she's doing fine, and would love another rousing round of Scrabble with her!

Sounds as though your Sister is babying and protective too much of Mother

all done with love of course but I agree with both the physical and the mental...Use it or lose it.

You sound like a very loving caring family.

Re:

It really was, Sam. Like I said, we had fun, and exercised the ol' grey matter at the same time. Keep doing those crossword puzzles! I do them from time to time too. Good fun, and good stimulation!

Re:

Glad you concur, FSI. So . . . how are you at crossword puzzles?

posted by JimmyA on July 18, 2012 at 1:37 PM | link to this | reply

I have done a crossword, at least one, every day for the last 30 years and I know it's good for the brain! Nice test to put the mind at ease regarding your mother, too! sam
