It would be tough on those gals who thought they had to be married to escape a worse fate! I have always been my own person so it would not have bothered me to be alone and I doubt I would have gone on a ship that had unsanitary conditions as well! But that was then and this is now so it is nearly impossible to predict what would have truly happened had I been faced with those circumstances! sam

Very interesting information about the young women and India. The flower looks like a color that would go well in India.

I am sorry if I gave the impression of frivolity. In my defence I can only submit that being an accountant you added everything together. It was unfortunate that it seemed I was making light of those poor girls.
Tip me out of the cradle.

Re: Ray
Yes Ray I sometimes do not bother to take my woolly hat of indoors if it feels cold.
I expect the tales would hold too much misery, except for the lucky ones, imagine coming back disappointed.

Yes the young ladies you saw probably depicted the lucky ones Pat. It seemed a long way to go to bag a soldier, but then what a miserable existence existed for a young woman with no dowry. About sixteen to twenty three and one had not much chance of a hubby.
Wars probably killed millions of young men.

Yes I bet I would have kept out of your way, I don't suppose we heard much about the poor girls who did not make it they were called empties when shipped back.

Re:Shobana
I thought you were a bit down Shobana and the women had it pretty tough here, but I think they are gaining the upper hand. I don't know if there are any as the Captain of a ship, perhaps you set a prescient with your last poem.

Yes, I think so. I began writing blogs here in 2004, and I just don't know how to quit. It is like I "have" to do it. I love that yellow rose.

Those were bad times and I'm happy I came along after that and in Canada. Serving in India wouldn't have been my cup of tea. And the poetry does seem a task to make any kind of impression for me. The rose is very special my friend.

Yes absolutely gorgeous rose you have there CC. Well, in the 1800s, the women of India did not have much option but to get married and have children - no equal rights and stuff like that. Writing emails does get one on a better understanding with the other CC and how great friends are made. I have been a little off - down with flu hence my sporadic appearances these days. My daughter is home tomorrow for the summer holidays so will keep busy there. Take care my friend and you are right - cameo appearances are not for blogit friends - you tend to miss them and hence we cuddle up closer when one leaves.

The Rose is exquisite and i enjoyed the thoughts about grabbing a
husband. Why even myself as soon as I left school Some of the Aunties asked me if I had a boyfriend yet...I was sixteen ...My Mother didn't feel that I needed so much encouragement!!!!
And KNocked up...well in my social set we were too terrified of our parents and again the Aunties to ever let ourselves come in any way close to chancing that.

It seems to me I've read stories of passages to India, and seen
films with the English ladies in pale linen suits, all belted and buttoned-down while the Indian ladies moved comfortably in silken saris. Still, the exotic in enticing in the young.

Oh what an intriguing idea. Would make good book and movie material. I loved the poem and wish there was still some concern for how we comport ourselves.

Fascinating, CCT!
I imagine there are some good tales there if one has the time to pen them. Yes, guess we do try to give best impressions of ourselves but probably less effort as the years go by. Amazing floral color there..

I did not know that so many women went to India in the 1800s. It makes sense...I find it to be a task that we have to do as well.
