Re: Cell Phones
Good question, Jimmy, an analogy I've often used myself. Studies have proven time and time again that driving while texting or talking on a cell phone is now as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than drunk driving! And yet, as you've said, there's a good percentage of people out there who would chastise the drunk drivers but seem to see nothing wrong with texting while driving. It's a dangerous hypocrisy! Thanks for weighing in.

Cell Phones
My wife and I were watching Oprah Winfree's show a few years ago and she was outraged about distracted driving -- mainly because people were steering with one hand and holding cell phones up to their ears and carrying on a conversation with the other. This was back in the good old days before texting deemed even more of a distraction. Why the heck do people think it's wrong to drink and drive; and they become much more of a hazzard with their texting and yacking.

Re:
I hope that's not necessarily true, luster! Yes, not only was the wrong person disciplined, but her actions, as far as I'm concerned, did not warrent a firing either! I do so hope there's a law suit over this one!

Yeah, Katray, that sounds about right. Like I sometimes say ( usually with a fair amount of sarcasm ) . . . logic prevails!

that doesnt make any sense, it seems like the wrong person got disciplined, sounds like a law suit to me, but then again companies can fire you for anything at all almost

Re: Re: Wow, that is wrong on so many levels!
Um, probably 3, maybe 4; the rudeness of texting in class, doing so after being asked not to, the teacher being reported and subsequently fired for reacting.

Well, Katray, I'm not sure how many levels may be involved, but you're absolutely right! It is wrong on each and every one of them!

Yeah, mariss, it does feel that way sometimes, although I would hate to think of those of us who actually are considerate and follow the rules as "the lowly ones!" Is there any way we be the "exalted ones" instead? Crazy sometimes, isn't it?

I'll bet you were, TAPS! Well, let's see . . . if a dirty look can get you fired, then I think a "raspberry" might get you 10 to 20 years of hard labor! Soon there'll be "Face Police" positioned everywhere to be on guard for anyone expressing themselves negatively with their faces toward anyone else! My gosh it's getting ridiculous out there!

I guess when people are important enough, you cannot even look their way now, much less expect them to follow rules like other lowly ones have to.

Amazing, FSI, and scary! When I first read this article, there was a tiny part of me that was hoping against hope that it was just an idea for a plot for a bad movie! But alas, that wasn't the case . . . !

And that's one invasion, Against, that we're all going to have a difficult time thwarting! Before long, people are going to be incarcerated simply because someone else presumed that they were "thinking" something evil. George Orwell never thought of this aspect!

Thanks, Justi. Like most people, I hate to be the bearer of bad news from time to time, but people should be made aware of these types of things going on in our warped society today! Glad you agree!

Re:
This might be, Sam, one of those rare incidences when you would almost actually applaud the instructor if she had simply walked over, took the cell phone from out of the student's hand, and threw it out the window. But of course, if she had done that, she still be hanging from the rafters because of it!

Good for you, Naut. I'm praying that more people see the absolute ridiculousness of this particular case, and that more people feel as you do. Put the goddamned cell phones down once in a while, people!

Re: i know and this is what is ruining or has ruined our western Society.
That's true, Kabu. But in this incident, I'm really not sure which was worse. The actual action that caused the disturbance ( the texting ) or the end result after the instructor gave said student a dirty look. All I know is, I hope that the teacher sues the powers-that-be in that school system for wrongful termination, provided of course that the judge or arbitrator who oversees the case has even an ounce of common sense. If not, then that teacher will be in for a very long struggle!

Re:
Yeah, Eleanor, that's one aspect of it. And God forbid the teacher actually tried to "discipline" the child in any way. Remember the days of Catholic school teachers whacking students on the knuckles with wooden rulers? That action today would probably result in a ten-year prison sentence! Now you can't even look at a student angrily! What a world!

I think this type of thing is getting worse. They are people bent on punishing people after presuming the thoughts of those people. It's a total invasion into our psyches.

I agree with you absolutely! And I would hope that instructor sues for wrongful dismissal - if I were a lawyer, and anywhere near Menlo Park, I'd take her case pro bono...

i know and this is what is ruining or has ruined our western Society.
No discipline, you can't tell a student a child anything unless you first tell them all their good points and then ask ever so gently if perhaps texting at YOGA WERE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CONCENTRATING ON YOUR INNER BEING AND NOT THE WORLD is quite the thing to do please could you consider other people....UGh This is what is eroding our societies. Can't do any discipline at all.

The world is turning to be a ridiculous one with the high technology going on. The same case as the parents before would question their children instead of the teacher for having bad scores in school. But now, it's the other way round, if the children get bad scores in school, the teacher gets the blame.
