At first I was horrified, thinking he had encountered a rattler, but was relieved to find it was probably nothing more than a garden snake...Of course, that doesn't help if one suffers from ophidiophobia...

Lucky for me that I have no fear of snakes that don't come with a rattle on one end. We have a few garter snakes living around our property, they keep the mice down so we co-exist. After all, they are one of Gods creatures too...I mean its not like they are spiders!

Adnohr oh I know exactly how you feel. It is terrible. I had that very sort of phobia until a few years ago. I don't know how I got rid of it but it is gone. I do not want to see one or be around one but I haven't that paralyzing fear I once had. Bless you dear, hopefully it is gone. I think they are the most detestable animal on earth.

Snake incidents can be quite distressing. I've had a couple of them in my lifetime that left me cold. LOL

oh dear I shouldn't giggle for I have phobias over those big hairy Spiders
chances are you won't see another snake for a long time. They can be quite close but are very good at keeping out of sight....and they don't bite...not these little critters up here.
but it is possible that having survived the encounter, you may have overcome some of your fears.

Snakes give me the 'pucking' creeps, too! I have one that lives in my yard and how I wish he would move on! LOL! I read CC's idea and I doubt I could pull it off myself! So I immediately thought, "Where's Fred when ya need him?" lol You made me smile but I feel for you on this one and I would stay out of the area, too! I wish I could do the same but I am not in the bush and my yard is just an ordinary city one! LOL, AGAIN! sam

Actually - this is not snake country, Pat_B, which is probably why they are not often seen. They are not dangerous - only garden or green variety, and they do eat bugs, so... But they let off some kind of ooze or spray when threatened, which is why Smooch kept spitting. Ben, the lab, caught one once (not here) and backed right off after he tasted it. I never saw him go after another. But Smooch is a pit - their reputation for tenacity is well deserved. C.C. - what an idea!! I run away from even rubber snakes - can't look at one in a picture - I doubt very much I'd be able to pull that one off!!

Well what I would do dear is get an imitation snake off the net or a couple and poke mustard or smear them with something that has no smell but doggies detest. It looks like sooner or later Smooch is going to be bitten unless he learns the hard way. We have not got any snakes to speak of so the problem rarely arises. Tie a piece of string to your imitation snake and pull it through the grass as soon as Smooch sees it shout 'snake'. Well after he has spit it out. Then get a big stick and whack the snake swearing as much as you can and try it the next day, to see if it has made an impression on either of you. Smooch should stand back and watch the top dog deal with the problem.

Smooch is growing up so fast -- he's a teenager already, still cute though.
