Re:
There's a joke here in Jersey, Utah, that people like to use from time to time, saying that the reason it's called the Garden State Parkway is because we spend more time "parking" on it then driving on it! It's a frustrating, vicious cycle, but one we just have to live with I guess because people's natural curiosity will always get the better of them, never thinking about the poor schmuck(s) behind them now stuck in traffic!

Well they sure do here, and it dosen't need to be an accedent either. It could just be a cop on the side of the road and suddenly...Parking lot.

Re:
Well, Corbin, to be honest with you, I think I can understand someone slowing down to watch two cows having sex more than I can understand people slowing down just to see a wrecked auto! And how fresh could that roadkill possibly be?

Note to brain: Don't hit enter until you're done.....
We have an abundance of rubberneckers here in KY.....unfortunately, it's not just because of wrecks. It can be cows having sex, fresh road kill, people cutting their lawns, and sale signs at Hardee's.

Geez, Eleanor. I don't know about the updates, but when I'm sitting in that traffic, the furthest thing from my mind is getting the "news" out to anyone else! I just want to get through it and get home!

Re: JimmyA
Sure, Wiley, sure! There had to be somebody out there who would make light of such a mind-boggling scenario. Well, let me put it this way: if that was the scenario happening, I probably wouldn't blame so many people slowing down to watch!

Re:
Frustrating, Sam, is actually an understatement! I have lost so much time in my life sitting in traffic, only to find out that it was simply due to people slowing down to look at an accident on the other side of the highway. This may sound terrible to think or say, but sometimes . . . sometimes . . . I understand why some people end up on a rooftop somewhere with a rifle!

I had a feeling, Kabu, that perhaps not the name but the phenomenon itself might be at least somewhat universal. I just wish I could figure out what the appeal is. Personally, I have no real interest is seeing mangled cars . . . or bodies!

Okay, FSI. Glad we're not alone. Not that I'm glad that you too have to deal with such idiocy . . .

Nope, not foreign at all to my hometown. We are all rubberneckers! When one accident occurs, you will see updates on Facebook within a few minutes. Faster than the media.

I have heard the term before but folks in my town get away from the flashing lights as soon as possible so we don't have to tolerate the gawkers so to speak! I would find this scenario to be rather frustrating! sam

This Marylander is familiar with rubbernecking and has seen it occur plenty of times on our roads.
