Re:

Goodbye, Utah? I thought I remembered you saying you were going to whittle your posts down to just one, but are you leaving all together? I haven't been on my computer in a couple of days . . . I'll have to check out your latest Blog!

Re:

Personally, luster, I think I would have a difficult time determining who amongst them I would consider as having the worse life, when my heart goes out to any Holocaust survivor! They should all be judged "winners" as far as I'm concerned!

Re: leaves me with a eerie feeling to think that someone has to be judged b

That's true too, Straight. Wonderful, inspiring stories, but surrounded by a beauty pageant? It is kinda eerie!

Re: Re: Re: I am not the best one to ask about Miss or Mrs. Any Contest.

I agree, Kabu. That was pretty much my original argument. I just didn't like the "beauty pageant" forum it was under.

Sometimes we agree, and sometimes we don't, but I don't want to leave without saying goodbye...So goodbye my friend.

leaves me with a eerie feeling to think that someone has to be judged by

their story. Of course, hearing stories of survival can be inspiring. But surely parading involves more than that?

Re: Re: I am not the best one to ask about Miss or Mrs. Any Contest.

i find it bizarre too Jim and I can think of many many more effective ways to keep the reality of what happened alive. Museums full of written testimonials along with proof photos and such and trial details ........

Re: I am not the best one to ask about Miss or Mrs. Any Contest.

Well, that was ceratinly a different type of feedback than I was expecting, Kabu. But you're right. First of all, I personally have no interest whatsoever in any beauty pageants, regardless of their content or participants. And that's also true that this particular pageant seems to discriminate against the male Holocaust survivors, who I'm sure have incredible stories of their own to tell! The whole thing just sounded a little bizarre to me.

Re:

That's probably true, FSI. Like I wrote, according to the article, these women were apparently more than happy to participate in this contest, and tell their stories. But it just seemed a little odd to me that they were willing to be judged by these stories as well. I just wished that it was held under a different forum other than a "beauty pageant."

Re: Jimmy

Actually, Naut, I had the chance to bring up this topic to a good friend who is Jewish, curious as to their response, and they seemed to feel as you do. Forgetting the "beauty contest" aspect, he also feels that any forum that keeps the remembrance of the Holocaust in people's minds is a good thing. It is also looked upon as good for these people to tell their stories. I just wish it was along the lines of a documentary or a university gathering or something similar, and not held under the guise of a "pageant."

I am not the best one to ask about Miss or Mrs. Any Contest.

I can't stand cattle Shows!!! and what about men? They went through the same evil!

Like you I can see both sides. I guess it's one of those things where I have to be in their shoes to truly understand.

Jimmy

While at first reading I shared your sense of ambivalence about this event, on reflection I must come down on the side of the contestants. Many of them probably did not merely 'enjoy' themselves in the ususal sense of 'having fun', but found it cathartic to tell the world of their ordeals, finding some relief from the burden of their memories - and that is to be applauded...
