Sam I think this is one experiment that has no future. Buy a nice light wide hoe and keep a tilth on the ground. If those snakes don't bite, Oh SAm you are in a fix I would not like to throw a tarp away, but peace of mind , I suppose.

I think I would have nibbled gratefully, that way I would be able to keep an air of mystery about me! LOL! It was a hot day in the desert today but I had to deal with it to get some much needed work done. The straw is giving me fits after the wind blew everything apart! It doesn't take much for them to get going. I put down newspapers, four pages thick, and the stuff is coming up through the paper! It is driving me nuts because that didn't happen last year. Alas, I am resigned to keep pulling throughout the summer. It does come up very easy and I toss it on top to expose the roots and it's bye bye straw shoots!
I had to take the tarp off my bicycles that I have been storing outside because the hornets were making their nests in it and I can't have that. So I pulled it all off and I rolled the tarp up, grabbed it and I'll be damned if a small garter snake didn't come scrambling out of it and startled me to no end. I stayed away from it until I was at the end. Then I opened the gate and dragged it to the driveway where the garbage container sits. I waited another half an hour then I went out and rolled it up and toss it in the container! Now, I will probably be on edge every time I go to it until Tuesday when they come 'round to empty it! LOL! I tell you those little snakes just make me cringe! They are so darn fast when they take off and thankfully in the other direction.
