Re: A Great Idea? Well, maybe, but....

Any rational person will see that you have the right point of view.  What is seems, however, is that conservatives seem to allow no opposing points of view.  What we have are people with strong beliefs and viewpoints, mostly religious, that allow no deviation from such.  As is obvious in our present Congress, the conservative wing broaches no compromise, as has been common in the past among all factions.

This post of mine is in response to a similar response of a conservative blogger.  I trust you have read that post.

A Great Idea? Well, maybe, but....

I’ll admit American’s seem to have irreconcilable differences, but as for a full divorce…I dunno. I mean, all we do is fight. We just can’t get along. We argue over everything. We’re constantly squabbling and bickering…. We sure SOUND like most of the married couples I know!

Seriously though, as you point out, we had a trial separation, back in the 1860’s. That whole thing wasn’t pleasant….

Not all Southerners are Conservatives. In my sister and her husband you would find two well-educated, committed Liberal Democrats. There in lies the rub. If the country splits, walls (figuratively, at least) will be erected. The free exchange of ideas could end. As dogmatic as many seem, there are countless Liberals who were raised as Conservatives and only changed their views when exposed to Liberal speakers and thoughts in college. (Many Conservatives were also raised by Liberal parents, of course) As a Liberal, you are, theoretically, open to new and challenging ideas. Even if you strongly disagree with these ideas, you can debate them openly, rationally. If two ideologically apposed nation rise, might one or both refuse to engage in fair--or any-- debate? Might children grow up without ever being exposed to any ideas other than those of the ruling generation? Can any of us risk leaving so many innocent young minds behind? If each side is so certain their views are correct, shouldn’t they want the chance to prove it? I get your point. I know you were just responding to Conservative calls for separation, but maybe we should stick together just a little longer. Hopefully we haven’t reached the point of no return quite yet.
