It is an epidemic for certain! I think suicide is the end result of severe depression. Social media has a way of bullying that is unlike none other in history and these teens feel a deep pain that is beyond the bullying of our times! They get a perspective of the whole world knows everything and yet it is not that way until they take their life! sam

hear, hear - I don't think parents are as hands-on or as plugged in as to what their kids are doing compared to past generations.

My eldest was bullied and it made him nervous and with drawn

but I don't think that he ever considered suicide. Just has made him a great parent really.

Re:

yes that is so true, is it in the parenting?

lustorlove

It is a serious problem that I believe starts at home. You touched on a good point with 'texting' and cell phone and parents shouldn't be as free with their money going to their kids.

Yeah, I grew up with and was surrounded by bullies too. And if every kid my age who got bullied had committed suicide, our population by now would have decreased by several thousand! Two wrongs don't make a right, and suicide, like you said, does nothing to "get back at" the bully! Strange times we live in indeed!

Today's bullying is worse than it ever was, it can be brutal. Schools, teachers, officials should be stonger against it. Those are the parents that should take a look at their children or are those children the products of bullying parents?

Re: Re:

When I was in high school, a kid no one considered even to be unhappy--because he never let it show--killed himself. I knew him, a little.  There had been a suicide a few years before, too, in that nice suburban school.  No one ever knew why--there were rumors, but we kids never knew for sure.

I agree, having a parent at home for the kids, would be a help--if that parent is there for the kids.  I know some kids--and grown folk now--that were happier when that parent was not at home.

Re:

yes, we hear of it more by media but I never heard of anyone in my age bracket doing this deed as a kid or teenager

Re: There are a couple of answers to your questions that come to mind.

and one thing I would have to say, we need more stay at home moms to help with the raising of a child and be aware of their situation

What Ciel says makes a lot of sense. Now with news being 24/7, we hear about suicides and bullying incidents more. I wonder too if kids hear about it and decide that is the way to go for them. Hopefully we can put an end to a serious problem.

There are a couple of answers to your questions that come to mind.

One, is that while there have always been bullies and bullying, it is only in latter years that we are generally aware, as a wider community, of suicides: we have a much faster, wider-ranging means of sharing information and news, so we hear of more such incidents.

Do they not realize...?  No, they don't.  They are kids.  They don't have a great sense of proportion, tend to be very self-involved, and are wracked with emotional pain they don't know how to cope with.  And when one is at the point where suicide seems a rational option, one is way past the point where one can  believe anyone cares. Suicide is a profoundly lonely act, committed by one who feels utterly abandoned and isolated.

And that's why you are totally correct in saying that parents and the friends who do care need to be aware and supportive of a kid, not just who might be in trouble, but all the time, because that is what parenting is.  If there are more suicides by kids for any reason, in these times, I would say that's why: kids are abandoned to cope with all the challenges of adolescence, on their own.
