I'm afraid I agree with Ash.
The best part of this post was your few lines at the beginning.

It has been observed, though off the top of my head, I can't quote sources,
that a symptom of decadence in a society is the decline of births among the privileged classes. Augustus decreed against the practice, in ancient Rome, in fact, of not marrying, or not breeding.
Why would this be? Is it the thoughtful ones who think the world is too crowded? The selfish ones who don't want to share the goods in the pantry? The pessimists who don't want to send their offspring into a failing world?
What do you figure?

Sometimes, in light of the way we behave,
I doubt we've evolved past the humans of the previous century. The power grid, cars, trucks, planes, sanitary water and waste treatments, etc., has kept us freer from disease, but less fit. We've weaned ourselves from nature. This can't be good.

Often evolution is looked at as it was back in the day. I found it refreshing to read an article that analyzes it today.
