Kabu, the movie was "To Catch a Thief", which famously celebrated the erotic possibilities of fried chicken: at the moment when Cary and Grace finally got it on that night, Hitch discreetly filled the screen with a shot of the fireworks going off outside!

Re: Bingo, Jay! One of my favorites! Incidentally, a Civil War re-enactor

put me on to this:  the movie was loosely modeled on "Grierson's Raid", an actual mission by a genuine solid-gold war hero we never hear about. Benjamin Grierson was a former music teacher who was deathly afraid of horses, stood the rebels in Mississippi on their heads for 2 or 3 weeks, and did it after sending nearly half of his force back home!To top it off, he made his troopers be polite to the locals.  After the war, he defended the black "buffalo soldiers" under his command!

Look him up on line.  He's amazing!
