Thanks, Sam. I'm glad someone caught on to that. Yes, it does seem as though "our children" are getting dumber, while other "primates" are getting smarter! Don't look now! Here comes Cornelius and Zera!

The difference in the last two words for me is one is going up while the other is going down! And, there might be some significance in the study, especially as it would pertain to youngsters just beginning the learning process via a computer or book! sam

Thanks, Wiley. I believe those same advertising dollars go into what they call "product placement" in movies and on TV shows. They want you to see one thing, to actually see something else! I just thought that these two particular stories had an odd parallel being in the same newspaper at the same time. Odd and, in a way, scary as well!

Re:
Yes, Bright, my wife and I have seen and heard of several primates with the ability to sign. Kinda gives Darwin a lot more credibilty, doesn't it?

It's never about intelligent stories, or who really cares about the intelligence of primates, it's all about the money in advertisements. You really do have great visual acuity.

Re: you have certainly given me something to think about more deeply
Perhaps, Kabu. Maybe educators will start to think along those lines. I've seen plenty of documentries highlighting various primates displaying some amazing apptitude toward language and other forms of communication. An insentive for children? Who knows . . .?

Good point, FSI. Although sometimes it's hard for me to imagine anyone in the news media having enough forthought to think along those lines! Personally, I rarely miss anything!

I read about the apes being able to identify the make up of words and wondered if it may be a way for preschoolers to start to learn. Including a reward like music or something for correct answers.

I can see the connection since literacy is often an academic issue as well...Like you I notice the placement of ads and articles in the newspaper. With so few people nowadays getting newspapers in their paper form some of those connections are being lost on the masses.
