I am so far behind in my Blogit post reading, but I'm enjoying getting caught up.  Your doggie is a heart-breaker.  I just love those innocent sad eyes.   I've been showing son Mark his pictures that you've posted and son says "His head doesn't match his body."  HAHAHA    Sorry about that.

Counter surfing is a new one on me but I love the term! And, so true that if one is not caught, then that's that! LOL! He looks so the part of the culprit! LOL! And, what an opening day for your Blue Jays, the longest opening day game in MLB and a win to top it all off! It would have been so fun to have been at that game! Go Jays! I am so stoked for the hockey game tomorrow night! For once, not one of the big schools is in the forefront! sam

Dogs know when they are being observed...

Saw this on film, an experiment to see if dogs are aware of eyes on them.

A treat was put on a low table in front of the human, and the dog was told, firmly, "No!" Dog left the treat alone--until the human closed her eyes.

I would put tempting things on the counter that taste bad to a dog... bitter apple, for instance, or hot pepper. If the experience is unpleasant enough, the dog learns from that, not from the Boss who isn't there.  So--doesn't blame the Boss: an added benefit!

I think all that dogs really want to do is to please their human counter parts, now all you need to do is convince Ben of this and everything will be fine.

Naut

There is yet another factor here. It is your kitchen the pack leaders have a right to it being open and available and the newest member leaving the counter most parts alone. My cat being both inside and outside when she was little we watched her a lot and whenever we saw her jumping to any forbidden place we talked to her and put her outside. I don't know if that is the rule but it worked.

Tricky it can be to catch someone in the act.

Goodness Naut no need to worry, just tack a fence around the table removable of course . Any money in this dog training lark? I knew some one who's dog was well behaved and only jumped up on the table when there was roast chicken, I cured  the problem, advising the old lady to only have roast duck.

I had a cat who did that. I learned to keep it clear of all temptation.

She owned the house, I only paid the rent.

Like an old saying goes: "The crime is not being caught, but the crime itself."
