I shouldn't have apologized because I didn't do anything wrong. I should have just said something like. "I didn't mean to offend you, I didn't know you were engaged." That would be simply stating facts without taking blame.

I am sorry. If she didn't wear an engagement ring, how were you supposed to know she was engaged? That makes no sense to me.
