Amanda6, Yes I've had that happen in short stories, too...
That was when the "short" were becoming "long", more like novellas...I've had the opposite happen, too - brought a character I killed off back to life after some tough rewriting..

i have tried
to do the same thing , in a sense! i went thru everything i have on paper, leaving only one copy, then comparing it to what i have on flash drives,, nerve racking for sure

Amanda this is to torment one has to go through when one comes back to analyse what one has written. It is almost too tiring to contemplate. Never mind take your time and I am sure you will work something out eventually.
