Re: JimmyA
Yes, they are amazing little creatures. And my wife would love to feed these animals . . . any animal really . . . from hand, especially the deer that pass through on occasion. It's fairly easy to understand the "skittishness" of the squirrels. Self-preservation is a natural instinct. Sometimes trust can result in their demise. We'll keep feeding them though. Thanks for participating.

A very well written post, one I can identify with. We have a lot of squirrels here in the woods where we live and we love to watch them too. Kabu is the first person I ever knew who has the chipmunks get right in her hand, and they eat from her hand. The squirrels are more skittish, but they come to her when she calls.

Re:
R.I.P. Sherwood! It's somewhat comical that you give them all individual names, while for me and my wife, every squirrel is Harry! They're a lot of fun to watch sometimes, and believe me, we keep them well-fed.

Well, he may not "eat down your house," but at least he's polite enough to knock first! We have a family of deer that occasionally romp through our yard as well, and a few of them have been known to walk up to our backdoor in our breezeway, looking for food. Our cats are usually in a different part of the house at the time, so they normally don't get the opportunity to be driven crazy by the outside critters ( except for the squirrels who run along the roof at certain parts of the day! ) It's all good, though. No matter what, we'll keep our animal friends well-fed. Now if we could just ease their salt intake . . .

Perhaps. It's still very amusing to watch them battle over that first piece, and you may be right. They may be assuming that the first slice is all they're going to get, so it's every squirrel for himself! But no matter what, I'm not toasting the bread first and applying a slather of jelly!

Since there is only one slice they must assume that that's the lot of it! LOL! But the squirrel's brain is about the size of a walnut so not much room for remembering in my opinion! And, they are always on the lookout for predators (hence the eyes on the side of the head) so they do not look at what they are eating! They need a pound of food per week to survive! One striking thing is that they need salt in their diet and perhaps that is why they all go for the bread, the darn salt in it! sam

Good questions there...I have a similar squirrel named Peppito. He has
a distinct scar on his head (no doubt from those fights you mention between them). He comes and actually looks in our window sometimes and it drives the cats crazy. That squirrel has actually "knocked" on our door before, too. So I make sure he is well fed so he doesn't eat down our house!
