Re: As I understand it, Bryson was talking about earth's normal atmosphere,
not the one we've polluted wth emissions. In other words, Earth succeeds at what it does by a phenomenal stroke of planetary luck - we are by great good fortune The Blue Planet. We support life with that relatively thin envelope of air, maintained by the constant photosynthesis of our plant life. A daily miracle!

It stunned me when I first read it in Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, a witty and eye-opening book. I've read his story of hiking the Appalachian Trail, A Walk in the Woods, several times.
