Re: Thanks. I was pretty pleased with the results, too. It was the first

tie I'd done anything like that.  The funny stuff and outdoor poems seemed to go over best.  We'll see what happens Frday.

I would have put my money on you for first, but I wouldn't have turned down the 25 bucks either...I am proud of you.

Re: Well, the stuff I use is pretty much in the spirit of the

thing.  If we all weren't such flaming amateurs, it would be different.

Re: Re: Well, as you know, a lot of my stuff isn't lyrical. I may start off

oops... with a love poem to Ginny if she's there, but the rest is humorous or about outdoor stuff in Harriman Park which is right next door - the kind of stuff that would be at home in a pub.   It's largely a college crowd who've come for fun.

Re:Actually, CC, this poem is about that first performance - I'm

just getting around to writing a poem about it now. It was a unique experience - I'd never done it before.  I plan to go to this next one next Friday.

Re: It sounds like a great time for those who like live performances

They were big in north Manhattan in the 70's.  My favorite was Old Shielings on Dyckman Street near where I lived.  One night Herself (Bernadette Devlin) showed up to sing a bit but couldn't stay, she said, because there were two members of parliament after her!  True or not, it played well with the largely Irish audience when she passed the hat!  But you're right - you can't beat the live stuff.

My hat's off to those teachers - I was one for 35 years and never had much success doing or teaching creative writing back then.  Something's happened to me in recent years, though,  and I wonder if I wouldn't be better at it now.

Re: Congratulations well done...the time diference, perhaps they are looking

Thanks, but who knows? - anyone can perform and anyone can be a judge at these things.  It's fun just to read your stuff aloud and get reactions.  Where ya goin'?

It sounds like a great time for those who like live performances

and Irish pubs. Congrats on being the one to beat!

In a related matter, there's a special on PBS about a poetry class held in a high school in Brooklyn. The director focused on three students. I caught the last half of it last night -- would like to see the whole film. What power and raw human experience goes into their work -- very like the angry poets on Russell Simmons shows on HBO. I'm beginning to think of poetry as a weapon. These teachers were fabulous, the poets amazing! Talk about wish fulfillment - it's what I always hoped education would be.
