You may have hit on the only antidote: geography! Overconsumption when no one has any money? We are indeed a weird people! Likeable and generally nice, but deeply weird!

Re: Thanks, it all started with my actually picking up a little book on a
Barnes and Noble sales table - it was a little bedside gift book about type fonts, of all things. The topic was so original that I didn't put it down until the last minute (the operative thought in my decision to leave it there was "Wait until you get home and take THIS out of the bag! What have I done!") Impulse shopping can be a serious problem this time of year when you're doing last-minute shopping.
