Nautikos

I am so happy you're back but I'm stiil that uneducated slob that has a huge dislike for that Muslim faith and Arabs in general and really care more about our own government arresting immigration from different regions than I worry about Egypt. Anyway my time in Morocco left me with the opinion that they ought to turn all that sand into glass. Write on pard. Are you going to write any other posts apart from this one?LOL

i once knew two wonderful Coptic Christian Egyptians.....the one thing that

the relationship brought home to me was the truly basic difference in our social our historical thinking. Will we ever find common ground....I don't know, but I refuse to write Israel off because she sits in a hot bed of hate and distrust.

The middle east...

If there ever was a place where nuclear war would break out, this is it.  What can we do indeed?  Start a campaign such as Radio Free Europe that broadcasts a more moderate Islam "truth"?  A battle for hearts and minds lost is a battle that ends in blood.

I find it interesting to see how it all intertwines. A fascinating read I find this to be.

The question, as always, comes back to this:

What do you suggest be done about it?  You've told us what doesn't work, you've convincingly argued that the situation for democracy and the Western values system is untenable.  Now tell us what you believe would work.

One of the ideals of the Western model is that of inclusiveness and tolerance.  It is this ideal that, in part, some Western leaders seek to defend.  If we abandon it, to defend it, what have we got?  Homeland Security? We seem to be living in a world of steep slopes and loose scree.  Once we take on the tactics of what we abhor, to defend our right to abhor it, once we lose what we consider the high ground, it will take a mighty effort to gain it back again.

So--we state the value, Thou shalt not kill... and have set aside a certain group of people we exempt from this ideal: we send out soldiers trained to kill, to defend those of us who are deeply programmed not to.  Do we need to create another isolated, specialized contingent of wreckers to demolish this enemy of our ideals and values?  Should we select another body of men and women to cut off from the normalcy of our ideal world, to do what we don't want to do--what it would demolish us, to do?
