- Go to JESUS CHRIST: One of a Kind
Re: Surely not, Jay. To me, "buzz" means the feeling even one
sip of wine brings - i.e. it ain't grape juice. It's the sensation St. Paul speaks of with approval.
I wrote this in reaction to the prettied-up image of Him as a well-scrubbed well-dressed Anglo-Saxon dressed up for some Sunday-School bible pageant! He was poor, probably did rough carpentry work, could talk easily with common people, lepers, tax-collectors, fishermen, prostitutes, Roman soldiers, temple priests, radicals, conservatives! He must have been a riveting speaker, brilliant teacher, loyal friend, and natural-born leader unafraid of anyone. He was capable of great anger and great love. It takes nothing away from Him to say that all of this came from His resources as a real human being. It makes Him all the more amazing.
I think of Ezra Pound's wonderful little poem about Christ, "The Ballad of the Goodly Fere". ("...No capon priest was the Goodly Fere/but a man o' men was he...") No churchgoer himself, Pound said he wrote this little gem when he heard someone using Jesus' name "in vain" in a bar.
As for who He was praying to on the cross, I have no clear idea except that He needed someone and believed that Someone was listening. Solve that one and I guess you solve the mystery of the Trinity! - Bob

I too believe that our Lord had to learn the human side of things, even in the good book they say he was a biber of wine, but surly not a drunk I think. What I wonder more, while he was on that cross, in his pain and suffering (from some mordern perspectives) just Who it was He was praying to?

Good perspective, I like the humanisation of somebody who is prone to being made an icon
