Re: That essence you speak of? That's what I was after, but it's an
elusive thing and I'm still not quite satisfied (I revised the ending twice after posting it!)

Re:Life back then was very hard, for sure. For one thing, the thought
of surgery and dentistry back then always keeps me from being too sentimental about it! But reminders of the past - like stone walls and  old photos - are wonderful, aren't they? - Bob

What remains is the essence you picked up on and shared so beautifully with us Bob...I really liked this one.

Fascinating to think back about how life was then...better and worse. Like this one.

Re:I'm very glad you like it, CC! I've wanted to write such a poem for a
long time now.  I'm still not sure I got it right, but old stone walls fascinate me.  What a prodigious amount of work they represent, and how different the area must have looked back then!  What did that old farmstead look like, what might I find if I spent an afternoon nosing around with one of those metal detectors!  Is there a root cellar or a bit of foundation somewjhere close!   And so on.  From time to time, I myself have raided an old (abandoned) wall for flat stones I could use back home.  For a while, I took to wearing an empty backback to haul
likely ones back to the car. Those were the days. The backyard stone wall of my own that I made out of them is my personal eighth wonder of the world, which we both can admire as we drink our beer when you come over to visit.  Then we'll go over to Skyland in New Jersey - those people really cherish anything that grows! - Bob

I have a soft spot for stone walls Bob I liked this. We have many walls and some are actually

being vandalized for the stone. About ten years ago my boundary was moved and a an old fashioned type wall rebuilt with topping stones if one has a smooth top the teenagers suss it out and sit along it half the night.

Re: Took me back and made me think about how
Thanks.  A really great poem about that theme is Carl Sandburg's "Grass"! - Bob

Took me back and made me think about how
the earth returns to form after our disarray. Great work!
