the whole country has gone mad and refuses to pull together in a crisis. Ky (where I come from, originally) is not always known for it's brilliance.  I have withdrawn largely from politics because of this situation of none of them seeming to be what they say or to be right anymore for America.

People just won't listen!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. The average politician, regardless of their affiliations, don't really give a rat's ass about the average citizen! They're only interested in furthering their own political ambitions, catering to their own band of constituents, and gratifying their own inner circle of family and friends. Democrats and Republicans are becoming famous for trying to repair certain damages well after they are perpetrated. Our country's motto should change from "In God We Trust" to "Look! The horses have escaped! Close the barn doors!"

It's complicated...:)
My opinion based on what I see in really right wing Republicans around me: many, many of the folks who elect people like Mitch are Christian Right-ists and go along with wealthy, corporate elitism because they agree with quite a few of the elements of the agenda: take away everything possible from the vulnerable (most especially appealing when they are sinners such as gays, single mothers, etc.) and then they will have no choice but to turn to religion and church. The more followers, the more power to religion, to the point of theocratic rule. This is not the goal or reasoning of all Republicans or Christians, of course, but it is of enough of them to be pretty chilling - again, my view drawn from what I've been told person to person and what I've seen..
What is so hard to grasp is how they can so obviously vote against their own economic interests as the majority are middle, working classes. It is a matter (again, what I've been told) of putting aside their interest for the greater good they so fervently believe in (putting the brakes on the things they consider sin and converting masses of people to their way and power.) The fact that it would be forced via no other choice for a safety net (what about the free will God gave us is something I ask but never get answered) doesn't seem to be important - they truly believe this is how their God desires the world to be.
The agendas of the rich go hand in hand for the most part with the agenda of the far religious right - repeating myself - spooky!
