Partly, it wasn't so much the riots as the aftermath of them; the populist media-led outrage against the rioters that carefully steered away from asking questions such as "why now?" and focussed on a sort of neo-fundamentalist oppression that allowed everyone to feel self-righteous. It was easy to see that justice would be forgotten and causes ignored as long as people refused to think for themselves.
