It is safer sometimes to have nothing left to lose.
So some people stop trying to have any more than nothing.

Re: sam444
Thanks you Sam!  I was so pleased with that line - it's what defined the rest of the poem

Re: lionreign...you've captured that despair we likely all feel at times...
thanks Rumor, I think it's part of my style to write in absolutes; one is rarely a little glum but lost in a sea of misery...  in short, I might have exaggerated my initial perception to make the point more clear :P

Re: CHIFFCHAFF
thank you, I know I went through it once and I am much more appreciative of life because of it

What an awesome opening line, it really make a point! And I thought of the people I have known who fit the imagery and truly it is a life in waste! This is pure power in poetry for me! KUDOS!

Very powerful description of
so many persons I see and care for everyday when they show up for their appointment. If they really need to be followed, we have the case manager find them and get their medication to them and to come in for care.  We have a day center where they can shower and wash their clothes and get clothes, blankets, snacks and drinks.  Excellent poem.

That was a powerful poem that truly reminded me of my life as a drunk 44 years ago, and you described feelings so very well.

lionreign...you've captured that despair we likely all feel at times...
but this individual seems to have come to the end of his rope..one can feel his hopelessness...
