The Message
Tolkien's books were definitely geared toward people with longer attention spans -- we need to take his writing in the context of his times.  The importance of his work is in his message, I think.  He truly seemed to fear the changes he saw in his world, and apparently thought we should be more careful of our environment and our lives.  I have to admit that I enjoy the movies much more than the books myself, but I'm going to re-read them now that I've seen the entire trilogy.

Maybe, but even then I have read other books writen around that time and find them a to have been edited better. It was just Tolkien's way of writing.

I too read the trilogy ( to understand the movie)
One thing is obvious, this book was written before televison had conditioned our attention span to ten minutes.
