When a republic starts letting the majority suppress the minority, that is when the "mob rules", ie democracy. Which is usually the beginning of the end. History tells us that a republic has a life span of about 250 years. Our forefathers recognized this, and said that we should strive not to get to that point.

Even Canada has an "out" if we have a minority govt in power....
A majority is safe for four or even five years, but a minority (where the opposition parties have more members than the "minority") can be voted out by a "no confidence" motion at any time.
...this is one advantage to having more than two political parties (about the only one)...

our Governor general once sacked a gov. in australia...it caused quite a
stir at the time as you may imagine.
