As much a losing a parent can be painful, there's something to be said for an "Instant exit" - both my parents did it and I'm kind of grateful I didn't have to watch them suffer through some long, painful, dread disease.

If you're going to pass on, doing it quickly is the best way. I'm sure he's continued on helping others & enjoying simple pleasures.
